2007-2008 Elk River Boys Youth Basketball Traveling Team Home Page

Team:  5B

Head Coach Todd Huberty

Scores:

Tourney:  Spring Lake Park – Nov 3rd - 4th

Tourney record:  1-2

Season record:  1-2

Coaches Comments:  Lost the 3rd place game on a last second shot (great game).

Being it was the first travel tournament for most of these boys the team looked great we were in every game.

Coon Rapids Tournament: 1 win and 2 losses.

Comments: Tough tourney as it was an A and B combined. We got in some foul trouble and lost the consolation championship in overtime with the boys battling hard to the end. Defensively we are getting stronger every game.

Elk River Tournament: 1 win and 2 losses

Lost both games on Saturday to very good teams, including our second loss to Maranatha where we were more competitive than our first go around.

Beat Rogers for 3rd place on Sunday in what was by far our best 4 quarters of basketball. Most impressive was our press break, and the big improvement from the new travel players.

Tartan Tournament:

Comments: The boys played a solid tournament.

We lost our first game to Maranatha for the third time. The boys came back from a 12 point deficit to tie the game with 1:10 left in the game only to give up an easy go ahead basket, definitely our best effort against that team.

Second game was not our best effort but came out with a win which is the sign of a good team. It was a tough, physical game with lots of fouls going against us.

Third game we played very aggressive and built an early lead and controlled the game the rest of the way through (great hustle).

The boys are playing aggressive basketball and are running the plays both ends of the court to keep us in games. Need to work on coming to the ball and catching it as well as our shooting, capitalizing on the easy lay ups and put backs. We are working our way back to .500, with the boys getting better each and every game.

 Tartan Tournament 2-1 Consolation Championship

Season Record 5-7

Brooklyn Park Tournament January 4-6, 2008:

Elk River 27       Wayzata 18

We won our first game with a solid effort against Wayzata on a Friday night.

Elk River 27       Mahtomedi 35

Tough opponent probably should be an A team. We did not start out strong but beat them the second half 15 -14.

We played very aggressive and gave a great effort. Unfortunately the loss put us in the consolation bracket.

Elk River 26       Spring Lake Park 16

We had solid defensive effort against a very pesky team. The halftime score was 10-8 and then we hit are stride somewhat in the second half hitting some key free throws.

Elk River 35       Armstrong 33

Fun game that went back and forth with the Elks making a couple of crucial shots in the end to win it. The boys are really developing playing solid defense and seeing the court making for some great team play.

Rogers Tournament January 19-20, 2008

5B: 2 wins and 1 loss

Elk River 28      Rogers 27

For the first time we got ourselves on the right side of the bracket with a nail biting win against Rogers.

Close game the whole way through with the free throw in the last 10 seconds being the go ahead point.

Elk River 27       Centennial 23

Centennial is an A/B team playing “A” brackets for half of their tournaments. We played solid basketball the whole game even though we were seriously outsized with one of our post players out with an injury. Nice win puts us in the championship.

Championship!

Elk River 16       Maranatha 28

Our first championship game was versus the dreaded Mustangs. We are now 0-4 against them and did not have our best effort against them only scoring 16 points. Defensively we did well keeping them less than 30 points. They are an “A” and will be playing up the rest of the year.

2nd place!! Way to go guys. We got our season record to 10-10 and hopefully we can build from there. The best part is we have 9 solid players and can sub in and out without missing a beat. Different players are stepping up each game which is fun to see.

Blaine Tournament January 26-27, 2008

5B:  3 wins and 1 loss

Elk River 45      Forest Lake 5

Again we won the first game with a good effort. We did a good job in the second half running our offensive plays.

Elk River 44      Waconia 18

Again a solid effort the boys are playing well. It is nice to see our point totals in the 40’s.

Elk River 33       Andover 17

Wow! Great start to the game taking a 19-4 lead into the second quarter. We cooled off offensively after that but played solid defense throughout.

Nice win!

Championship Game

Elk River 20       Mahtomedi 39

Nice for the boys to be in the championship for the second week in a row. We did not play as well as we played on Saturday and struggled to score points. Again a tough opponent we are now 0-3 against Mahtomedi.

Forest Lake Tournament February 2-3, 2008

We continue to improve getting our season record to 16-11. Our goal is to be playing our best basketball by the time we get to state so let’s continue to work hard fellas.

5B:  3 wins and 0 loss

Elk River 32      White Bear Lake (Black) 20

We started our 8:00 am game a little sleepy getting down early 1-8. From there we kicked it in gear.

Great defense on a team that had some nice ball handlers.

Elk River 28      Spring Lake Park 10

This was a frustrating game with the score only being 8-8 at halftime. SLP played a tight 2-3 zone the entire game with us chipping away and figuring out ways to score in the second half. Again great defense giving up only 2 points in the second half.

Championship Game: 1st Place

Elk River 37       White Bear Lake (Orange) 13

For the 3rd straight week we were in the Championship game and you could tell by looking at the boys second was not going to be good enough. Coach Vail quoted Bum Phillips by saying in Rogers we knocked on the door, in Blaine we pounded on the door, and in Forest Lake we kicked the dawg gone door down. Great effort against a much taller team!

February 23 Super Saver

5B:  3 wins and 0 losses

Elk River 34      Shakopee 20

Good game a little rusty to start having come off a two week lay off but all in all played well.

Elk River 46       Zimmerman 29

The boys were on fire to start this game and got off to a big lead. By far the best shooting game we have had this season. Laid off a little more than I would have liked in the second half especially on half court defense.

Elk River 36      Jefferson 35

I don’t know if we were tired or had a little bit of carryover from the poor defensive game we played against Zimmerman but we got down 12-2 early in the game.

We then started to play better and got the score down to 4 at halftime. The second half was a blast battling to the end never taking the lead until the final 46 seconds. Nice comeback against a team that will be in our state.

All in the entire tournament was a great thing for us knocking some of the rust off and hopefully preparing us for Rochester.  The 4th straight tournament that we played for first and the second time we won it all. Great job boys!

Season record 19 wins and 11 losses.
