Tourney: Coon Rapids – November 16-18 Game 1: Elk River 26 Park Center 12 Game 2: Elk River 28 Spring Lake Park Blue 0 Game 3: Elk River 22 Anoka 24 OT Second Place Champions Coaches Comments: We had an outstanding tournament. The offense really picked up speed matching up to the defense. We showed improvements from the first tournament in overall play. We played an evenly matched team in the championship game. The boys played hard and had their hearts in the game. We lost in overtime by one basket. Tournament Record: 2-1 Season Record 4-2
Tourney: Elk River – Dec 8th – 9th Game 1: Elk River 27 Anoka 30 Game 2: Elk River 45 Osseo 28 Game 3: Elk River 27 Elk River 29 Coaches Comments: We played Anoka for the second time this season and lost another close game. We put up a last second 3 point shot that would have tied the game but the out of bounds line was stepped on before the shot. During the Osseo game we were really pleased with how our full court press developed. The game against the Elk River 5C team was another close game and we had some chances to tie it up. They showed us the 1-2-2 zone defense which was new to us. We learned some new things and realized some areas that we need to work on. Overall the boys played really well together this weekend. There were some close spirited games and they continue to develop and learn as a team. Tournament Record: 1-2 Season Record 5-4
Tourney: 2007 Tartan Coaches Classic, Dec 15th – 16th Game 1: Elk River 31 Prior Lake Gold 27 Game 2: Elk River 21 Prior Lake Blue 16 Game 3: Elk River 31 Centennial 14 Coaches Comments: The first game we jumped out to a big lead and then had to hang on by our teeth. The other team came out strong in the second half and pressed us hard but we were able to hang onto the lead and win the game. The second game was very tightly played throughout the game. We played back and did not press too much. The defense played very well and definitely won that game for us. In the third game our sagging man-to-man came through for us and we passed the ball much better. We are exciting by the fact that this is the boys first tournament win.
Tournament Record: 3-0 Season Record 8-4

First Place Champions
Coaches Comments: The boys had another great tournament. The first game we played well against New Ulm. The second game we came out to a slow start against Zimmerman and then turned it on in the second half to win the game. The third game against St Cloud was a defensive battle and it was close throughout the entire game. Our team defense has become our main stage and this is what helped us win the final game. The boys are playing very well together as a team as they continuing to learn and develop. We are really pleased with them as this is their second tournament win.
Tournament Record: 3-0 Season Record 11-4
Tourney: Monticello Boys Winter Tournament – Jan 19th & 20th 2008
Game 1: Elk River 19 Anoka 43 Game 2: Elk River 50 Becker White 7 Game 3: Elk River 41 Andover 27
Third Place Champions
Coaches Comments: Our first game was against Anoka and we were just not able to match up with them this time. We have played Anoka three times this season and out of our five loses three of them have been to Anoka. The second game against Becker we came back more aggressively and played well. It was a good team win with even distribution, good passing and a lot of different players scoring. We met Andover in the third game and they shot the ball very. It was our press and aggressiveness that won the game for us. Another 2-1 tournament…great job boys!
Tournament Record: 2-1 Season Record 13-5
Tourney: Blaine Boy’s Invitational Basketball Tournament January 25th – 27th 2008
Game 1: Elk River Spring Lake Park Blue - Forfeit Game 2: Elk River 25 Waconia 26 Game 3: Elk River 37 Spring Lake Park Red 18 Game 4: Elk River 47 St. Anthony 24 Game 5: Elk River 37 Centennial 36
Consolation Champions
Coaches Comments: The first game we won by forfeit from Spring Lake Park Blue. The second game against Waconia was a tough game. We played good defense and we were proud of the boys character. They were down by 10 points at one point but they never quit and got back in the game and only lost by 1 point. We were disappointed with the loss but not with the way the boys played. We would like another opportunity to play this team. The game against Spring Lake Park Red was an all around solid game. We played good help defense for the most part and we did not lose our people underneath the basket. We had some good passing and ran the post up with some fast breaks. The lid finally came off the hoop in the game against St. Anthony. We pushed the ball hard and ran the fast break extremely well. It was one of our better games of the season. The final game against Centennial was a nail-biting win as we hit a free throw with 3.9 seconds left in the game. Centennial did a good job passing the ball trying to expose our help defense but we hung in there just well enough to win the game.
Tournament Record: 4-1 Season Record 17-6
Tourney: Forest Lake 31st Annual Basketball Tournament February 2nd – 3rd 2008 Game 1: Elk River 38 Forest Lake Rangers 12 Game 2: Elk River 35 Coon Rapids 20 Game 3: Elk River 23 Anoka 39
Second Place Champions Coaches Comments: We played in our second 5C tournament of the season. The first game we came out slow against Forest Lake. Then we started pressing hard and playing aggressively and just ran the game away from them. Our pressure defense held strong and performed well. The second game was very exciting for the boys. The Coon Rapids team was a lot larger than we were but we pressed really hard and were able to just wear them down. They had a hard time getting the ball up court on us as the boys worked the press beautifully. They played with intensity and were firing on all cylinders. This was one of their better games of the season if not the best. The third game we met up against Anoka who was another bigger team that was well coached and could pass the ball around. We attacked hard and were very aggressive but we just were not able to generate enough points to win the game. They handled our press very well and our half court offense stalled a little bit against the bigger kids. We were glad to play them as we were looking to play some better teams to sharpen our skills and we got that out of this game. The boys had another excellent tournament and they played very hard..way to go Elks!
Tournament Record: 2-1 Season Record 19-7
Tourney: Forest 19th Annual Roseville Boy’s Winter Classic February 22nd – 24th 2008
Game 1: Elk River 36 Bloomington Jefferson 18 Game 2: Elk River 15 Anoka 42 Game 3: Elk River 32 OT Andover 30 Game 4: Elk River 12 Woodbury 46
Coaches Comments: The first game we started out slow with the game being tied at half. Then we had a really good second half and held them to just six points. We were pleased with the way we played defense and we passed and shot the ball much better in the second half. As far as the second game goes this is one we just want to put behind us. We did not play the defense and speed that we are capable of and we missed a lot of shots that we normally make. The third game against Andover was an exciting game and we were able to hold on and win the game in overtime. In the final game against Woodbury a few things went bad early on and then it all kind of unraveled for us. It showed that we have more work ahead for us as we get ready for the State Tournament.
Tournament Record: 2-2 Season Record 21-9
Tourney: MYAS 2008 Boys State Championship March 15th – 16th 2008
Game 1: Elk River 18 West Side 35 Game 2: Elk River 29 OT Minnetonka 25 Game 3: Elk River 28 Rosemount 38
Coaches Comments: We ended the season going 22-11 and we just feel like the boys learned so many different things this season. We played with the best teams in the state tournament. We only went 1 and 2 but we played really well and the boys held their own for the most part. The character of our team is very strong with how hard they work. We didn’t have to beg them to work hard it’s just in their nature. They are a very good team especially on defense. They had a great season and the boys deserve to be very proud of themselves. They are all very good boys and it was a complete pleasure to be their coaches. Way to go Elks!
